the Portrait

Over the years I have painted or drawn personal portraits with varying degrees of success, the most memorable being Dorothy, a neighbour and good friend of Irene's family in Bushmills. She had had her hair done, worn her very best coat and duly sat, very still and prim, whilst I sketched away. Unfortunately when I proudly 'unveiled' the finished portrait the reaction was far from what I had expected. Disgustedly she upped and left the room and the house, uttering the immortal line, "och, I thought ye said ye could draw!!!" Later, I learnt not to be so true to nature as to methodically include moles and double chins...(she, later forgave me, I think, at least we spoke whenever this mad Englishman came over to Ireland, and she remained a true and valued friend of the family until her death)

Today...I have had commissions for individual and family portraits which I complete using my fine ink pens to create individualised, highly detailed portraiture in ink dots on A3 (42 x 29.7 cm) heavyweight cartridge paper.

This is, obviously, the main feature but the idea of the Portrait extends to include copy taken from the original which can be reproduced as;
